About Vilfo
Vilfo is created by the team behind OVPN.com, but is an entirely independent company. Years ago, we started the development of a product called OVPNbox - which was a router based on pfSense.
We learned a lot by building OVPNbox, and several lessons were tough. Vilfo is the result of all that learning.
The software for Vilfo was released to OVPNbox owners in January 2018. Their feedback and experience was be the basis on further improvements until we shipped all pre-orders in May 2018.
Vilfo AB is located in Stockholm, Sweden. The team consists of Andy Tsymbal, Tamas Szabo, Roman Kutashenko, Maximilian Holm, Claudiu Boboia & David Wibergh.
The idea of OVPNbox was born
We wanted a simple way to protect all devices in a home or office without having to install software on all units and handle their connectivity.
Delivery of OVPNbox v1
The predecessor of Vilfo, OVPNbox v1, was shipped to customers in May 2015. It was based on pfSense and ran on a Shuttle DS61.
Improvements & new generation of OVPNbox
After feedback from customers we had a long period of releasing updates and learning from our mistakes.
We also wanted to improve the hardware a lot and offer wireless capabilities, and thus we started the search for new hardware.
OVPNbox v2 was released!
Containing a lot of improvements and better hardware we released OVPNbox v2 to the world. Almost a thousand units were sold to OVPN.com customers.
Improvements & lessons
By selling a thousand units we received a lot of feedback. That feedback is the core of Vilfo.
We learned what we did right - and what we should do better. As a result, we hired people to have a full-knitted team of dedicated developers to ensure that Vilfo will provide the best user experience a router can offer.
Start working on Vilfo prototype
We went through about 20 different designs. This was one of the final designs we played with.
Beta release of Vilfo for OVPNbox testers
Onboarded the first OVPNbox customers to beta test the Vilfo software.
Decided on a design
The final product design was selected and CAD models were created to be able to create the first prototypes.
Continued work on Vilfo
The beta testers provided incredibly valuable feedback which we used to further improve Vilfo
Received the first prototype
With great affection we were able to hold Vilfo in our hands for the first time.

Second iteration of prototyping
We made some design changes to the prototype in terms of coloring and contexture as well as simplyifing the assembly.
Order steel moulds
We were satisfied with the design changes we made and ordered the production of the steel moulds.
Order production of motherboards
We ordered the motherboards for the first 500 Vilfo units
Launched on Indiegogo
We launched our crowd-funding campaign for Vilfo on Indiegogo!
Received shipment from factory
The shipment of all 44 cartons containing Vilfos arrived in our office in Sweden on May 23. Quality assurance has begun.
Shipped pre-orders
All pre-orders were sent May 28th. New orders are now shipped on a daily basis!
